Recording

Recording Settings

Configure recording behavior, countdown, keystroke overlay, and storage.

Accessing Settings

Open settings from the menu bar icon or via mouseviz://settings.

Countdown Timer

Configure the delay before recording starts:

  • 3 seconds — Quick start (default)
  • 5 seconds — Time to switch windows
  • 10 seconds — Longer preparation time

Keystroke Overlay

Pro

Two toggles control the keystroke overlay:

  • Show keystrokes — Enables the overlay. When on, only modifier keys (⌘, ⇧, ⌃, ⌥) are shown.
  • Show all keystrokes — When enabled, every key press is displayed. Useful for tutorials and demos.

Frame Rate and Quality

Pro

Adjust the recording frame rate (24, 30, or 60 fps) and quality preset for your needs. Higher settings produce smoother playback and more detailed heatmaps but create larger session files. Free users record at 30 fps with system default quality.

Clean Desktop Mode

When enabled, MouseViz automatically hides desktop icons during recording. Useful for screen demos and presentations.

Default Save Location

Exports are saved to your Desktop by default. You can change the export location in Settings > Export > Destination. Internal session data is stored in ~/Library/Application Support/MouseViz/.

Default Visualization Settings

Configure default visibility for each visualization layer (heatmap, trail, clicks, spotlight) so they're ready when you start recording.

Searchable Settings

All settings are searchable — use the search field at the top of the Settings window to quickly find any option.
