Task Conductor

Guide usability sessions through structured tasks with pass/fail/skip tracking.

Pro The Task Conductor requires a Pro license.

Overview

The Task Conductor is a compact floating sidebar (280px wide) that guides your usability session through each task in a study script. It is excluded from screen capture so it won't appear in your recordings.

During a Session

When a study script is loaded and recording starts, the conductor shows:

  • Current task instruction — what to read aloud to the participant
  • Timer — elapsed time vs estimated time (turns orange/red when over estimate)
  • Pass / Fail / Skip buttons — mark the task outcome
  • Notes field — add timestamped observations tied to the current task
  • Progress bar — visual progress through all tasks

Keyboard Shortcuts

ActionShortcut
Pass (advance to next task)⌘⇧→
Skip task⌘⇧↓
Add note⌘⇧N

Undo

If you accidentally mark a task with the wrong outcome, click Undo last task to revert and return to the previous task.

Auto-Success Detection

Tasks can be configured to auto-complete based on criteria:

  • URL Match — passes when the participant switches to an app matching a pattern (e.g., *checkout*)
  • Time Under — passes if the task is completed under a target number of seconds
  • Custom — matches a key=value pattern against event metadata

Task Markers

Each task transition automatically creates a session marker on the timeline. These markers are used for:

  • Per-task heatmap filtering
  • Timeline navigation in session replay
  • Task-level comparison between participants

Completion Summary

When all tasks are done, the conductor shows:

  • Overall pass count (e.g., "4/6 passed")
  • Total study time and average time per task
  • Per-task outcome list with elapsed times

Post-Study Questionnaires

After the last task, MouseViz can present standardized questionnaires:

  • SUS (System Usability Scale) — 10 questions, 1-5 Likert scale, scored 0-100
  • NPS (Net Promoter Score) — 0-10 scale, categorized as Promoter/Passive/Detractor
  • SEQ (Single Ease Question) — 1-7 difficulty rating per task

Questionnaire responses are saved with the session and included in exports.

Window Behavior

  • Draggable — drag from the header bar to reposition
  • Remembers position — stays where you put it between open/close cycles
  • Excluded from capture — won't appear in screen recordings
  • Always on top — floats above other windows
